Honoring Marjorie as she retires after 46 years of service

Friday, March 7, 2025

As we celebrate International Women’s Day – a day dedicated to recognising the achievements of women around the world – we take a moment to honour one of our own; Marjorie Toru, who is retiring after an incredible 46 years of dedicated service with BSP.

It was 7th of February 1979 when Marjorie walked through the doors of the National Bank in Cook Islands for the first time, not knowing that she would go on to leave an indelible mark in the organization that has since transformed to be the South Pacific’s International Bank – Bank South Pacific (BSP Financial Group).

“My father handed me the local newspaper containing a job vacancy when I returned home to Aitu from Rarotonga for my school holidays. That was when I scored my first job – right out of school. My journey started with National Bank that became European Pacific Bank in 1986, to Westpac in 1989 then became Bank South Pacific in 2015. Having to work through all four banks here in Rarotonga, I am proud of my journey. I am even more proud to say that the workplace has changed. We have more women in management roles now than when I started 46 years ago,” Marjorie said.

Over the years she has worn many hats, starting off from Teller Support Officer to Ledges – Wages Salaries to Government Opening Account, Customer Service to becoming a mentor, leader and the heart of her workplace – a mother many young staff look up to. Her dedication, resilience and unwavering passion have not only contributed to the success of the organization in the Cooks, she has also inspired many colleagues.

Throughout her career, Marjorie became a beacon of hard work, integrity and kindness. Whether it was guiding new employees, leading projects, or simply brightening the office with her warmth and laughter, she touched the lives of everyone who is privileged to work alongside her.

Her impact extends beyond her work, she has been a champion of women’s empowerment, inclusivity and mentorship, embodying the very essence of what International Women’s Day stands for.

Her achievements did not come without sacrifice and the strong support system she had at home – a husband whose support enabled her to perform her best at both worlds – her home and work. “It was challenging having to balance my professional and personal life but I am grateful for the full support from my husband (Cedric). Having his support made work a whole lot easier,” Marjorie added.

Among her many highlights with the bank was her visit to PNG in 2019 alongside her husband, when she was recognised for her 40 years of service with BSP.

As Marjorie embarks on the next chapter of her life from March 21st, we celebrate her legacy and the countless contributions she has made. While she will be deeply missed in the office, her influence will continue to be felt for years to come.

“As I exit the bank on Friday 21st March,  I am grateful for the opportunity given – my employer enabled my family financial stability. I was able to provide a home for my family, give my children a decent education and chance in life and most importantly, contribute to my community, country and the Pacific through this great financial institution,” she concluded.

To Marjorie, thank you for your 46 years of unwavering commitment to lifting those around you, and for being an inspiration to all of us. May your retirement be filled with joy, adventure and well-deserved rest.

From all of us across the BSP Group, and in particular, the Cook Islands, Happy International Women’s Day and Happy Retirement!
